When was the last time you opened a magazine, menu of book and were able to find information on nutrition about African food or even just get a mention of some of your favorite African dishes? A while? Never? – most likely.  But, Africans (especially in Sub-Saharan areas) are dying faster and in larger numbers than any other group of people in the world.  Each of us is expected to live for an average of 46 years only.  Asia also sees a lot of disease and poverty, but has a life expectancy that is 20 years higher for each person. The life expectancies of Europe and North America are 74 and 78 years respectively.

Health and lifestyle have been clearly shown as the most important determinants of this high death rate in Africans. Diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure or hypertension, obesity and cancer, occur in younger age groups in Sub-Saharan Africa, regardless of socioeconomic group, compared to developed countries, and are fast catching up to the infectious diseases. These chronic diseases, which often emerge in middle age after long exposure to unhealthy lifestyles, are frequently incorrectly considered to be uncommon, because of the dominance of infectious diseases.

Introducing...

I decided to write this book because of the need to address a healthful diet from an African perspective. Plus, a lot of people get their health information from magazines, radio, or questionable chain emails and a good number do not understand what they hear or read. In fact, some of the information may be misleading or incorrect. I do my best to simplify and clarify some of these confusing points.

See what people are saying…

"must have read my mind!!! I always have a problem with diet books because they dont really provide alternatives that contain Nigerian food/recipes. This is a 'must get' for people who like naija food and want to eat well, maintain a healthy heart/weight. Lara is a doctor, so she knows what she is talking about oh jare..." - Tope FD

"After reading “Healthful Eating for the African” from cover to cover, I am convinced that it should be required reading for anyone who enjoys African food and would like to “eat their way” into a healthier life. Written by a physician, this book breaks down complex facts about the interplay between nutrition and disease into simple consumable bites. It offers examples and illustrations of how readers can decrease their risk for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer among others, by enjoying carefully prepared African food."-Frederick Korley M.D.Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Johns Hopkins University

"...She recently wrote this book and it covers a dietary topic that is both interesting and relevant for people who love their African food and want to stay healthy. Check it out!"- Ijeoma A

"Read the few pages [of book preview} on blurb and was hooked! Will share the link on my wall if you don’t mind." – Bunmi OO

This book contains information and several tips that are unique to the African palate in an easy-to-read format.  As a doctor, I feel a strong charge to share this information with you  in order to improve your longevity and quality of life.Healthful foods can be tasty. Choose foods that are gently made, minimally processed, delicious, and still good for your body so that you boost your immune system, improve your heart and vascular health, and reduce the free radicals that causecancer and other diseases.

You can lose weight on any restrictive, low calorie diet such as the pineapple diet, liquid fast and so on, but you will be depriving your body of valuable nutrition, and besides, who can drink lemon tea with one measly teaspoon of honey forever? As for body-wrapping, the only thing you’ll lose is your comfort! Our bodies are made to use parts of different food groups in concert to give us the best outcomes on a cellular and physical level. So one can enjoy any food occasionally, just in moderate amounts.

Tastiest Tips…

  • Use food as medicine. This way you can avoid medications in the long run.
  • Avoid fad diets. Did I already say this?· The concept of deprivation in order to lose or maintain weight is a set-up for failure.
  • Use seasonings. They brighten up your food flavor
  • Aim for a colorful plate of food.
  • Choose to live long and have good health; fill up without filling your arteries with plaque

I am so excited to share with you my love of various foods and using them to fight disease and increase wellness.Remember, food is essential to our functioning so enjoy it in the best way!
